Regular meeting of the SKLAC - we are seeking community input on the proposal to change the dump to a transfer station and stop all burning of garbage, and on the
speed limit change on the Tagish Road.
The intent of the South Klondike Local Advisory Council (SKLAC) is to represent the interests of Carcross and the surrounding area. It was formed by
Order-in Council 2006/160, and is governed by the Municipal Act. As its name suggests, it is an advisory body only, one of seven such councils in the Yukon Territory.
The name is derived from the South Klondike Highway, which runs from Whitehorse, Yukon, to Skagway, Alaska, passing through the centre of the region.
To fulfill its purpose, the SKLAC and its elected members shall:
- Facilitate community discussion of and provide advice on Community Lands issues;
- Facilitate community discussion of and provide advice on Development of New Facilities and Services;
- Facilitate community discussion of and provide advice on Environmental Issues;
- Facilitate community discussion of and provide advice on Tourism/Economic Development;
- Liaise with other organized representative bodies; and
- Pursue increased powers and responsibilities under the Municipal Act, as and when supported by the community.
Community Lands shall include issues related to zoning, land use, development of an Official Community Plan and subdivision planning.
Development of new facilities and services shall include issues related to waterfront development and community infrastructure (new buildings, roads, etc.).
Environmental issues shall include issues related to sanitation, dogs, health and safety, environmental protection and drinking water.
Tourism/Economic development shall include issues related to the promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism and development and advocacy for community concerns
about given developments.
Liaising with organized bodies shall include relations with other community-based groups (Chamber of Commerce, college, etc.), governments, non-governmental
organizations and other representative groups. All liaison efforts shall be in relation to issues set out above as part of the committee’s mandate.
Pursuit of increased powers and responsibilities shall include providing information and support on the possibility of taking on increased municipal powers, either
as a Rural Governance Structure or a full Municipality, as defined under the Municipal Act.
